CLEO MERTON BISHOP was born in Maine on 13 September 1917, entered West Point on an Army appointment, and was commissioned into the Army Air Corps upon graduation. During WWII, he flew P-51s with the 52nd Fighter Group in Italy until November 1944, when he became a POW in Germany. In the Vietnam conflict, he served as the Vice Commander of the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing in Thailand, flying F-105s.
Other assignments include Commander, 79th Tactical Fighter Squadron in England; Vice Commander, 36th Tactical Fighter Wing in Germany; Commander, 31st Air Division in California; Deputy Commander, 5th Allied Tactical Air Force in Italy; and staff duties with Headquarters USAF, USAFE, TAC, 7th AF, and 9th AF.
Since retiring as a brigadier general in 1972, he has lived in Florida, where he worked until 1985 with the Florida Employment Service as a Veterans’ Employment Representative. He and his first wife, Dorothy, were blessed with three sons and one daughter: Robert, Susan, David and Thomas. With his second wife, Mary Ann, he has four step-daughters — Candace, Gail, Sharon and Diane — plus a combined total of twelve grandchildren. |
