No. 13235  •  27 October 1916 – 30 May 2001
Died in Harriman, Tennessee, aged 84 years
Interment: Harriman, Tennessee

Burwell Baxter Bell, Jr.I WAS BORN Oct. 27, 1916, Asheville, NC, the first of three sons born to my parents, Burwell Baxter and Myrtle Rollins Bell. We lived in Currituck Co., North Carolina. This was the ancestral home of my father. I attended Currituck County Schools, Episcopal High School, Alexandria, Virginia, and one year at the University of North Carolina prior to entering West Point. I graduated 19 January 1943 after missing some academic time due to a foot injury incurred while playing a scheduled baseball game.

After graduation and a medical discharge, I went to Hot Springs, Arkansas, and was married to Mary Dye Rector. We had met while I received treatment to my injured foot.

My bride and I headed for a place known as “Manhattan Engineering District,” later known as Oak Ridge, Tennessee. We became parents of a daughter, Ameba Rector Bell, Ph.D., University of Rochester, New York, and a son, Col. Burwell Baxter Bell, III, U.S. Army.

Burwell Baxter Bell, Jr.I retired in 1974 as Design Superintendent, Instrument and Electronic Engineering, Union Carbide Nuclear Corp., Oak Ridge, Tennessee. We built a home on the Tennessee River, Roane County, Tennessee. We fish, hunt, garden, travel and enjoy family and friends.

Even though I was not permitted to receive a commission in the U.S. Army, my heart has always been there. My diploma hangs in my small study along with a beautiful winter scene of West Point.
