Thomas Wilson Brown
No. 13379  •  25 November 1919 – 23 December 2002

Thomas Wilson BrownI WAS BORN AT WEST POINT and as long as I can remember I wanted to be a cadet. After one year at the University of Missouri and a year in prep school, I became a member of our class. I enjoyed my cadet years. After the basic course at Benning, I attended Parachute School and was assigned to the “G” Company, 513th PIR, and since I was the senior officer (thanks to our four months promotion to 1st Lieutenant), I became the Company Commander.

Louise and I were married in Japan, and Pamela was born at West Point. After the advanced course in 1951–52, I commanded the Third Battalion, 32nd Infantry, 7th Division in Korea. The next ten years were spent at Leavenworth, England, the War College, and the Pentagon.

Thomas Wilson BrownBack at Benning in 1963, I was assigned to command a Brigade in the 11th Air Assault Division. That tour was interesting, challenging, and fun. The Division had the most talented group of people I served with in the Army. It became the 1st Cavalry and went to Vietnam in 1965. My brigade fought the battle of the Ia Drang, which was the first battle with regular North Vietnamese units by a U.S. Division.

After Vietnam, I went to CINCPAC in Hawaii. Two fine years there and back to Benning as CO of the Combat Development Command Infantry Agency. I then went to Ft. Rucker to learn to fly a helicopter and then to the Combat Development Command Experimentation Command at Ft. Ord as CG. Another tour in Vietnam and wound things up as Deputy CG, MDW.
